Modern slavery and trafficking

Modern slavery exists in the UK and destroys lives. Men, women and children – UK nationals and those from abroad – are exploited in the sex industry, through forced labour, domestic servitude in the home and forced criminal activity. These types of crime are often called human trafficking. The true extent and nature of modern slavery in Sussex is not know as this crime remains largely invisible to the general public unless they know what they are looking for.

Sussex Police is working together with the City Council, other agencies and the wider community to gather information about modern slavery, help victims, and bring those responsible for exploiting men, women and children to justice.

More information on trafficking, the likely signs that would indicate that individuals have been trafficked for exploitation, as well as how and where to get help, is available. Click here to download the Brighton & Hove Traffick Watch pack, and watch this short information film which is designed to raise awareness of the issue and stimulate professional curiosity of public authority staff who are well placed to see many of the signs of modern slavery in their everyday work.

Remember, if someone is at immediate risk of harm always call Sussex Police on 999, otherwise call 101.
