Why We Exist

A low level of crime is central to enjoying a good quality of life. It is consistently rated by Brighton & Hove residents as the most important aspect which makes somewhere a good place to live. The Brighton & Hove Community Safety Partnership, known locally as the Safe in the City Partnership, aims to:

  • reduce crime and anti-social behaviour
  • improve feelings of safety and meet the needs of victims of crime
  • tackle underlying causes of offending and reduce harm from drugs and alcohol
  • take early action to prevent and 'design out' crime; and
  • reduce re-offending and achieve visible justice, including offenders participating in restorative justice and community payback

… and so improve the quality of life for all those who live in, work in or visit the city.

The Crime and Disorder Act 1998 introduced a requirement that the police, local authorities and other public agencies worked together and in partnership with others to tackle crime and disorder in their local areas. Three year evidence-based strategies were also required and the first Brighton & Hove Crime and Disorder Reduction Strategy was published in 1999. Since then we have produced four further strategies in 2002, 2005, 2008 and most recently in 2011 (current strategy is available here) and the Safe in the City Partnership has been working towards achieving the actions laid out in these strategies.
