The Safe in the City Partnership

The Local Strategic Partnership (LSP) has the role of planning and overseeing the long term future of the city and crime and disorder interests are represented on the LSP. Find out more about the Local Strategic Partnership here.

Responsibility and management of the Safe in the City Partnership

The Safe in the City Partnership Board is chaired by the council’s Chief Executive and comprises senior officers across the wide range of agencies who all have a role to play in tackling crime and disorder. The Safe in the City Partnership Board holds responsibility for ensuring the Partnership complies with legislative requirements. Because crime and disorder issues are intertwined with drug and alcohol misuse issues the Safe in the City Partnership includes experts in all these areas.

Partners and partnership business

There are many partners that support the work of the Safe in the City Partnership. Partners can be agencies, businesses or residents. More information about our partners and their role is available here. The role of businesses and residents is described here.

The Partnership plans its partnership business through groups and meetings. There are different sorts of partnership groups:

• Multi-agency strategic groups. Work related to the priorities (see button bar on left) in the Community Safety, Crime Reduction and Drugs Strategy is taken forward by bringing together the expertise and resources of different agencies and delivering action plans against agreed targets
• Multi-agency operational groups. These groups organise and carry out the practical work which directly makes a difference to people in the city. Specific problems, whether related to local communities or individual victims or perpetrators, are tackled through these groups which bring together the expertise and resources of different agencies.
• Consultative forums and groups. Elected members, local residents and communities of interest interact with partnership officers so that the needs of residents and businesses can be taken into account in the Partnership's work.

The Community Safety Forum provides the link within the Safe in the City Partnership and the democratic process and also facilitates consultation with local people. The Forum is chaired by council's cabinet member for communities, equalities and public protection and its membership includes local elected councillors, representatives of ’co-opted’ expert third sector organisations in the city, Local Action Teams and communities of interest. An open question time at the start of each meeting enables representatives and the public to ask questions of senior police, council and other statutory officers. The Forum meets quarterly and feeds into the council's decision making processes. Information relating to past and future meetings is available on the council’s website.
