A Local Action Team refers to:

  • any group of local community champions linked directly into the Neighbourhood Policing Structure, who can identify crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour problems in their neighbourhood
  • a group who can analyse the local causes and provide the basis for an effective local strategy, agreeing on priorities, generating ideas, appraising options and producing a balanced programme
  • a group who can then make it happen by the application of a simple action plan which commissions the work of other agencies including the police to resolve the problem.

Involvement of local residents and businesses are key to ensuring effective responses and crime prevention. Local Action Teams or other neighbourhood action groups provide a mechanism through which information can be shared between local communities and crime and disorder professionals working in their area.

An example of the sort of partnership activity that Local Action Teams can assist with is the identification of local projects to be undertaken as part of the Community Payback scheme. (See http://www.surreysussexprobation.gov.uk/ for further details around how to nominate a project.)

Guidance for LATs

Guidance and useful information has been put together in a document and distributed to LATs to assist them in their work. It also provides helpful information for anyone who is considering setting up a LAT. A copy of the Guidance is available here.

If you are a Local Action Team and you would like to make use of this website to notify your community safety events and news, please contact [email protected].
